Teen Scenes - Gilbert and Sullivan

Age 13-18, virtual and/or in-person

Instructors:  Robin Frank, Director of Education and Louis Dall’/*Ava, NY Gilbert and Sullivan Players

Gilbert and Sullivan operettas are known for their catchy tunes and hilarious dialogue making them perfect for young performers. Excerpts from the operettas will be assigned to the participants with appropriate role assignments in mind. Individual and small group sessions will focus on solo singing and dialogue reading. Participants may choose in-person sessions to take place at The Wang Opera Center or may choose to participate through Zoom sessions.

November 9 – December 11 
(Four 45-minute sessions, 1 per week, scheduled individually; the participant may choose in-person or virtual format)

Solo singing

Ages 9-18, virtual or in-person

Instructor:  Robin Frank, Director of Education

Participants work with the instructor on a song or songs of their choosing or are assigned repertoire appropriate for age and ability. The focus is on vocal technique, diction, musical interpretation, and dramatic presentation.

Diction for Singing

Adult, virtual workshops

Do you ever wish you had a better understanding of the languages you encounter when you sing? Or perhaps you wish you could sound more like a native speaker and less American when you pronounce foreign texts. These diction workshops will focus on learning fundamental rules specific to the examined language, applying the rules to musical texts, and practicing speaking. The format of the classes will include lecture-style teaching as well as interactive learning between the participants and the instructor.

Session 1:

Latin and Italian       
November 10 and 17, 7:00-8:30pm

Session 2:

French
December 1 and 8, 7:00-8:30pm

Cost:  $40 per session (each session has 2 classes).
Participants may register for a single session or for both sessions.

Deadlines to Register:

November 24 for Session 2

General Information

A limited amount of scholarship funding is available to participants under 18 who are in need of financial support. Contact Robin Frank at Rfrank@operanaples.org for more information.

Your safety is our concern. Cautionary measures are in place at The Wang Opera Center including increased cleaning and sanitization of the facilities. In-person instruction will be done with no more than 3 people in the same room with social distancing measures in place. Only participants are permitted to enter the building (parents are asked to stay outside). The instructor will be masked. Participants do not need to be masked when actively singing but must have a mask to enter and exit the building or use the restrooms which are available only for emergency use.
