‘A master of his touching, yet bold baritone’ (Berkshire Fine Arts), Matthew Cossack holds graduate degrees and awards from both Mannes College and the Yale School of Music. A native of Brooklyn, New York, he was a finalist of the Opera Index Competition, a Regional Winner in the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions, and a winner in the Opera Foundation Scholarship Competition in 2019. He made his European debut at the Deutsche Oper Berlin in 2019 as a member of the Stipendiat Ensemble.
After the pandemic, he returned as Starveling in A Midsummer Night’s Dream in 2021, and as the baritone soloist in a world premiere of Once To Be Realised, which toured through Berlin, Munich and Athens in 2022. He was a recent 2022 Sullivan Award Winner with the prestigious Sullivan Foundation, and was a finalist in The Premiere Opera Vocal Competition as well as the Music International Grand Prix Competition. He was a Studio Artist at Florida Grand Opera, performing Notaro/Magistrate (Gianni Schicchi / Buoso's Ghost), Sciarrone (Tosca) and Fiorello (Il Barbiere di Siviglia). Matthew made his Central City Opera debut this past summer singing General Howell (Kiss Me Kate), and Count
Capulet (Roméo et Juliette). He will return next summer to sing the role of Sonora (La fanciulla del West)
and cover Jack Rance.
