Generously Underwritten by Karl and Joanne Wyss

March 21, 2019, by invitation will be an unforgettable solo concert by Joseph Calleja, one of the leading tenors of his generation in collaboration with our own Maestro Ramón Tebar at the piano. This special engagement will include both a concert and dinner in a private club in Naples. Details and directions will be mailed with your tickets.

Blessed with a golden-age voice that outinely inspires comparisons to “legendary singers from earlier eras: Jussi Björling, Beniamino Gigli, even Enrico Caruso” (Associated Press), Maltese-born Joseph Calleja has quickly become one of the most acclaimed and sought-after tenors today.

Opera Naples invites you to a unique black tie-optional evening, including the concert and dinner, on Thursday, March 21 at 6:00 pm at a private club on Naples’ beautiful Gulf of Mexico.

An Evening with Joseph Calleja will feature world famous tenor Joseph Calleja with Opera Naples’ Artistic Director and acclaimed conductor Maestro Ramón Tebar, piano. While Tebar has made a name for himself as a conductor, he began his career as a gifted young pianist and his deep musicality shines through whether in front of an orchestra or piano.

Tebar says of their musical friendship, “I met Joseph Calleja five years ago at the Pablo Casals Festival in San Juan, Puerto Rico, where I was invited to conduct a concert. He was very happy with the concert, and we had an immediate connection, musically speaking. Since then, he has invited me to perform with him in many places, one of the most important being the invitation to conduct a concert at Buckingham Palace for Prince Charles. We have performed together at Royal Festival Hall in London, the Parthenon in Athens, in Germany, and in so many places, but this concert in Naples will be the first time that I’ll be playing the piano with him instead of conducting an orchestra.”

Calleja and Tebar recorded an album together titled “Calleja – Verdi” which was released to much acclaim in February, 2018. London’s Daily Mail calls the Verdi CD “a must for any serious opera fan.”

“Although there are many Verdi arias that Calleja is not yet singing on stage, he wanted to record some of them. He also invited soprano Angela Gheorghiu to Valencia, and we had a wonderful time recording the music with the Orquestra de la Comunitat Valenciana,” states Tebar.

Calleja’s expansive discography and frequent appearances on the world’s leading opera and concert stages prompted NPR to hail him as “arguably today’s finest lyric tenor,” and led to his being voted Gramophone magazine’s 2012 Artist of the Year. A Grammy-nominated recording artist for Decca Classics, he has released five solo albums for the label.  Calleja also appears as tenor Enrico Caruso in James Gray’s 2013 film The Imigrant with Joaquin Phoenix and Marion Cotillard.

Calleja comes to Opera Naples directly from New York and his role as Cavaradossi in the Metropolitan Opera’s current production of Puccini’s Tosca.  His other performances this season include the Bavarian State Opera (Norma/Carmen), the Vienna State Opera (Rigoletto) and the Festival in Aix-en-Provence (Tosca), amongst others. He will be singing at the BBC Proms, concerts in Aalborg, Vilnius, Cracow and Budapest and give recitals at the Vienna State Opera as well as Opera Naples in Florida.

This will be an occasion to remember for a lifetime! Please join us for An Evening with Joseph Calleja!
