Long before Rodolfo gently guides the dying Mimi down the steps into his garret, we’re aware we’re not going to get out of this theater dry-eyed.
Opera Naples has put together a nearly flawless production of Puccini’s most beloved opera, “La Boheme.” It has the right cast, right set and right mood for a holiday love story. The Hallmark Movie Channel can just eat its heart out. (For those who haven’t seen it, the final performance is at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 12. See information box.)
What makes this opera so inspired is the right combination of casting, Jeffrey Buchman’s careful stage direction, the Naples Philharmonic in the orchestra pit with Artistic Director Ramón Tebar conducting and beautifully realistic sets from Tri-Cities Opera Co. Sarasota Opera is credited with the props.
