O.N.E. Community

Community Activities 2016-2017 Season

Opera Naples produces and performs a diversified program of music offerings to the community under the general headings of outreach and education. These activities, an important part of our operations, are described below:

Young Artists Program

This program provides an artistically challenging environment for young singers, ages 20-32 entering the opera field. Young Artists are typically recent music school graduates who are seriously pursuing a career in opera. They apply through a national search to participate in a residency program with Opera Naples during the peak season. Participants are paid a modest internship stipend and are provided housing and transportation.

The Young Artists rehearse and produce a Young Artists’ Chamber Opera at the Wang Opera Center in February, they participate in opera rehearsals for grand opera productions, studying the techniques of opera professionals performing various roles under the general direction of Maestro Ramon Tebar, Artistic Director, sing in the Opera Naples In-School tour program, sing at Friends of Opera events, and some are awarded roles in grand operas being produced during their residency. Opera Naples staff, supplemented by professional voice teachers and singers, provide instruction, career advice, and technique counseling. Applications are done online and require a resume, video recordings, references, and an interview (under the general rules of the national Young Artists Program which is administered by Opera America).

Student Apprentice Program

This year-round program gives local students, ages 7-21 training and public performance opportunities including singing solo roles in main stage productions when possible, singing in the Opera Naples Chorus or Children’s Chorus, and performing in “Scenes for Teens” programs and community concerts (such as the Erich Kunzel Concert Series, the Rising Star Concert Series, art festivals, farmer’s markets, holiday concerts, and the annual Gala recital). Private vocal lessons and coaching are provided as well as group master classes. There is no cost to participants. Admission is determined by audition and interview.

Summer Youth Program

Each summer, students ages 13-21 are engaged in a two week training program that culminates in performing an operetta. In addition to preparing the production, the youth participate in master classes and workshops focusing on a variety of topics associated with opera including proper vocal technique, acting and improvisation, set and prop construction, and costume design. All interested participants are accepted into the program and perform in the production regardless of experience or talent. Casting is determined by audition; those who choose not to audition are cast in the ensemble. There is tuition, but scholarships are available.

Children’s Summer Program

In 2016, for the first time, Opera Naples will host children’s summer program engaging children ages 7-12 in various classes focusing on the creation and presentation of opera. Classes will include music, theater, art, and dance, and the program will culminate in performances of a children’s opera. There is tuition, but scholarships are available.

Elementary In-School Tour

Each year, Opera Naples’ young artists tour a one-act children’s opera to Collier and Lee County schools and after-school programs to expose grade school children to opera. The presentation includes an introduction about opera and etiquette, the performance, and a question and answer session between the students and performers. Previous in-school operas, specifically designed for elementary school students, have included Stop, Bully, The Three Little Pigs, Little Red Riding Hood, Hansel and Gretel, and Sweet Betsy from Pike.

Another successful program, The Miss Manatee Show, is an interactive program designed to personally engage students in musical activities and experiences in a classroom setting. Due to these programs, more than 60,000 area children have enjoyed their first opera.
